Applying to a “top” university is definitely intimidating. I thought so then, and I still think so now, but it is worth a try.

Lan Ngo commented on the post, When to Dump Your College: Transfer Mid-Year or Stick It Out? 11 years, 8 months ago
At this point, your options for applying to transfer for fall 2013 are limited because a lot of transfer application deadlines have already passed: March 1, March 15, and April 1. If there is a school you want to […]

Hi. Thanks for leaving a comment.
We get a lot of these types of questions, but the answers are unique to each student. However, a great way to start exploring these questions is to look up general […]

Sounds like it’s highly likely you’ll get in to UMD, good luck with both!

This is definitely worth mentioning in the Add’l Information section. Just explain it in the same kind of way you just did, briefly and in plain English.
Students tend to look like they’re begging for sympathy […]

I suggest asking your lab TA one of the following. Decide which is the best option depending on your relationship with your TA:
– if she would write a letter and if she could ask the professor to co-sign it

Lan Ngo replied to the topic A Second Opinion about Common App Extracurriculars in the forum Four-Year Transfers 11 years, 10 months ago
It seems redundant to write about being a recycling coordinator for both the Emory supplement and the Common App activities essay. It might be fine to leave your Common App activities as is–about being a news reporter.

Lan Ngo replied to the topic Is it possible to transfer if you exceed the maximum number of credits? in the forum Four-Year Transfers 11 years, 10 months ago
If you have 40 credits, that’s less than 60 credits, so you haven’t exceeded the school’s maximum. However, if you’re asking about what happens if you want to apply to transfer as a junior, then you would have to […]

Just to provide a specific example, if you want to apply to the business school at American University, the minimum GPA requirement is 2.5. If you have a 3.45 GPA, you’re above the minimum, meaning that you have […]

Lan Ngo replied to the topic Extracurriculars in the forum Four-Year Transfers 11 years, 11 months ago
I would urge students to do extracurricular activities that they’re genuinely interested in, rather than do activities to have items to list on a school application. It’s more interesting to see a student that is […]

You would have to ask your college about that because the policies are very specific to each institution. We wrote about an example of Academic Renewal at one particular community college: […]

Chris Goodmacher commented on the post, Should I Even Apply to Transfer to This College? Case Study: Brown University 11 years, 11 months ago
Hi Miserlou! You could totally try applying (and there’s little downside to trying to apply – you can always just apply next year if you don’t get in). You GPA is a little below the average for accepted transfers […]

Chris Goodmacher replied to the topic Transferring from Villanova in the forum Four-Year Transfers 11 years, 11 months ago
It really depends on what you mean by “quality school.” What schools were you looking at?
A lot of schools post minimum GPAs to apply to transfer as well as the average GPA of accepted transfer applicants. Take […]

Lan Ngo replied to the topic SAT/ACT question in the forum Community College Transfers 11 years, 11 months ago
The vast majority of the “top” colleges/universities require an SAT/ACT score for transfer applicants. Check the admissions requirements for each specific school you’re interested in.

Lan Ngo replied to the topic Transferring from Villanova in the forum Four-Year Transfers 11 years, 11 months ago
You can still apply to transfer. Choose a mix of different schools. The incoming class of transfer students each year at each school consists of a variety of students. You may just fit into the mix somehow for […]

Lan Ngo commented on the post, College Transfer Admission Criteria: What's a "Good" GPA? 11 years, 11 months ago
Hi, Maggie. Thanks for posting your story here. I would be more worried about other transfer applicants who are pre-med and have a 4.0 GPA or a GPA close to that. However, even worrying about that isn’t so […]
